Lithium and Salt Flats

Through the analysis of cultural, political, environmental, social and economic impacts exerted onto communities, societies, the environment and its elements, FARN encourages discussions around the corporate-driven model for energy transition and the extractivist operations launched under its wing. Introducing counternarratives that emerge from the territories affected and disseminating information about the value and importance of salt flat is an added value to the ongoing discussions on the subjects.

As part of a larger network, where we combine our efforts with those of local NGOs, global organisations, and national, Chilean and Bolivian communities. Since 2010 we have been supporting the 33 communities living around the Salinas Grandes basin and Laguna de Guayatayoc, in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy, respectively, in advocating for their land.

FARN recently formed the Andean Wetlands Alliance, together with a group of diverse socio-environmental organizations that came together to promote the protection and conservation of these ecosystems - as well as the water, biodiversity, territories and livelihoods of indigenous and peasant communities that depend on them - in Latin America, with special emphasis on Argentina, Bolivia and Chile.
