Slowing and delaying the expansion of fossil fuels in Argentina

The policy of all recent Argentine governments has been to expand extreme forms of hydrocarbon extraction. FARN's Research, Legal Affairs, Climate Policy and Communication teams work on different aspects of the energy sector in favor of a just socio-ecological transition, and this implies the cessation of hydrocarbon exploitation.

Among other actions, we provide legal support -including lithium if necessary- to communities suffering the main socio-environmental impacts of fracking and possible offshore expansion. Studies are carried out on the socio-economic impacts of oil and gas exploitation, as well as the associated infrastructure, providing information that shows the economic inconvenience of this type of energy matrix. In this area, we highlight a rigorous study of energy subsidies in Argentina, especially differentiating those received by hydrocarbon companies as a limiting factor in the transition to renewable energies. The economic research also includes an analysis of the impacts of offshore exploitation in historical perspective -demonstrating its inconvenience in material as well as socio-environmental terms-.

In the economic sphere, FARN also carries out studies on the financial actors that support hydrocarbon activity and holds meetings and advocacy meetings with these actors to encourage them to redirect their financing towards renewable energies, taking into account strict compliance with Human Rights and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights regulations.

Together with specialists from the academic sector, studies are also carried out to expose the impacts of hydrocarbon activities such as induced seismicity. The work with academia also includes the elaboration of long-term energy scenarios with fossil-free energy matrices.
We also highlight the participation in different working groups, both on fracking and offshore exploitation.
