A place for them - Construction of the Differentiated Care Service for Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer (AYAs)
Evidence suggests that some cancers in adolescents and young adults may have genetic and biological characteristics. AYAs with certain types of oncological pathologies see their chances of survival and cure increased when they are treated with pediatric protocols. There is a global trend for the treatment and care of AYAs with cancer to be considered as a specialty, and to be carried out jointly between pediatric and adult oncologists, in differentiated care and hospitalization spaces.
In Argentina there are no public or private institutions that provide differentiated care to this age group, with the majority of the adolescents currently being treated in adult institutions. For this reason, from the Natalí Dafne Flexer Foundation we have begun the construction of an Exclusive Care Area for Adolescents and Young People with Cancer (AYAs), in the Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Service of the Alejandro Posadas National Hospital.
The choice of the Posadas Hospital responds to the fact that it is a highly complex reference center that has recently been designated by the National Cancer Institute as a coordinating center for Care of Adolescents and Young People with cancer.
The project will be carried out over the next 18 months and is part of our Adolescents and Young People with Cancer Program. This work consists of the construction of an exclusive care area, which will be located on the 7th floor of Sector A of the Hospital and will have a total area of 600 m2, divided into two main sectors: Day Hospital and Internment with nine rooms.
