INFORMING AND ADVOCATING FOR SALT FLATS
Our work, encompassing strategic litigation as well as legal and administrative support, raises awareness about the poor enforcement of Indigenous peoples’ rights to consultation and free, prior and informed consent regarding environmental matters and environmental impact processes. We also aim at strengthening their capacities for the effective exercise of their rights.
Our work further encourages discussions around the corporate-driven model for energy transition —and the extractivist operations launched under its wing—, based on the analysis of cultural, political, environmental, social and economic impacts being exerted onto communities, societies, the environment and its elements. To that end, we seek to add value to the ongoing discussions by introducing counternarratives that emerge from the territories affected as well as disseminating information about the value and importance of salt flats.
Our actions are taken in the context of a larger network, where we combine our efforts with those of local NGOs, global organisations, and national, Chilean and Bolivian communities. Since 2010 we have been supporting the 33 communities living around the Salinas Grandes basin and Laguna de Guayatayoc, in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy, respectively, in advocating for their land.
